Meet The Owners of SLOFLY

Meet Creator and Co-Owner of SLOFLY, Doug

Where are you from?

Originally from Gaithersburg Maryland but left to do my undergrad at the University of Wyoming.

What brought you to SLO?

The first time was in 2006.... was living in Salt Lake City for work and was on a road trip when I stumbled on the city for the first time by accident. I remember driving the wrong way down Higuera, unknowing it was one-way and a kind lady let me know pretty quick. I immediately fell in love with the town after rock climbing on Bishop Peak and seeing the sunset. I later moved to SLO for work where I lived for 6 years.

What inspired you to start SLOFLY?

My career took me from SLO to Lafayette, Louisiana in 2016 (which is also a charming city with a ton of culture.) There I discovered a local company that did quality printed goods with hyper-local designs targeted toward the cajun heritage of the area. I immediately sensed that the Central Coast, with all of it's regional pride, could use something like that. With this, SLOFLY was born.

Hobbies?

I'm a driven outdoor enthusiast and have been my entire life. I love whitewater kayaking, alpine skiing, rock climbing, mountain biking, and am incredibly passionate about travel and have visited 52 counties and counting. My last trip took me to Tanzania where I was able to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro.

What do you do for work besides SLOFLY?

Around the same time I started SLOFLY, I pivoted my career from television journalism to independent film production. In 2018, I attended the American Film Institute in Los Angeles where I studied producing. I am currently in pre-production of my first feature film, which will be shooting in September of 2021.

Briefly describe your perfect day in SLO

Morning coffee at the Nautical Bean, then a hike up Bishop’s peak, wine-sipping at Kynsi, and an evening ride on the Bob Jones Trail to Avila to watch the sunset.

Fun fact that most people might not know

In 2014 I completed a full IRONMAN. It took place in Core d'Alene, Idaho and I found the Central Coast to be the perfect training location.

Meet Co-Owner of SLOFLY, Matt

Where are you from?

SLO!

What brought you to SLO?

I was lucky enough to be adopted at birth and was placed with my parents who met here locally in the 80’s. My grandpa, Louis Tedone, was SLO county’s first pediatrician and moved to the area in 1951 - This, combined with my family being nearly 60 large, has made our roots in SLO deep. I consider myself lucky to have grown up here with my family and would not change a thing in regards to my upbringing.

What inspired you to start working for SLOFLY?

After living and working in Long Beach, CA for a couple of years after college, I realized that the SLO lifestyle was calling me back home. I missed the perks of living in SLO and found that when I moved back, I had a whole new appreciation for minimal traffic, clean beaches, quiet mountains, mellow people and everything else that our community has to offer. This new appreciation drove me to want to help build something that represents the Central Coast community and local pride. SLOFLY was the answer.

Hobbies?

Surfing became my quarantine hobby and I can say that I am an addict. When not in the ocean, you will find me swimming at the pool, biking around town, stretching, reading, taking photos and playing board games/Wii. I love meeting new people and making new friends, especially in the water and on the race tracks of Mario Kart.

What do you do for work besides SLOFLY?

About a year before I decided to begin working for SLOFLY, I became a marketing specialist for a local marketing agency that works with doctors around the country.

Briefly describe your perfect day in SLO

Wake up early, pack the ice chest, load the surf boards, grab some sandos, surf and relax on the beach for the day!

Fun fact that most people might not know

I ran with the bulls in Pamplona Spain during the Festival of San Fermín and enjoy trying to retain my Spanish skills through speaking and listening to Spanish music.
